Skinner japes him on his first day and when Wharton turns the tables, harbours feelings of revenge; confirmed after Traill has beaten him in a fair fight. Skinner discovers that Trail has left the dormitory that night and locks him out, but in the morning Traill is asleep in bed, denies Skinner's story and no-one believes Skinner. After the Bounder has also seen Traill out of bounds at night, the Remove suspect the worst even though Traill still denies it. Skinner keeps watch and wakes the Remove next time Traill leaves the dormitory. The Remove discover he is sleepwalking, and he is sent home for a cure. Meanwhile Ponsonby & Co. are practising at cricket and challenge the Remove XI. Skinner tries to get Smithy in trouble for smoking, but Wharton warns him in time. Smithy turns down the invitation to play. The Remove meet Ponsonby's XI, and discover that Smithy is playing for them, going on to win Highcliffe the match. Bunter opens a letter to Dupont from his cousin Andre‚ Lombard and gets Skinner to translate it. Dupont gets a second letter from Lombard, arranging to meet, and finds out about the first letter. Lombard tells him that he has taken the blame for a robbery committed by his best friend Jean Lorraine, and is on the run to draw the scent whilst Lorraine gets away and arranges to repay the money. The Famous Five agree to help, and Lombard is hidden in the school. A French detective, M. Charlot eventually tracks down Lombard, but just as he puts the handcuffs on, a telegram arrives stating that Lorraine has been captured and confessed. Reprinted in Howard Baker Magnet volume 99. ALIENS AGAINST GREYFRIARS, Magnet 33 of 1908, by Frank Richards. Hoffman and Meunier visit the Famous Five to let them know that Beechwood School is to be officially opened the following day by the mayor. The Remove decide to jape the Aliens by screwing shut all the windows and gluing the lock in the front door, so the official opening will be unable to get into the school. Hoffman and Meunier get onto the jape, but are foiled by being locked in the wood shed. The opening goes as the Remove planned, leaving the mayor very discomfited. Herr Rosenblaum’s Foreign Academy has to close due to financial problems, and so Hurree Singh comes to Greyfriars; to be ragged by Bulstrode until Herr Rosenblaum catches him. The following day the other aliens arrive at the station, and a free fight ensues. Bulstrode continues to persecute Hurree Singh until Wharton challenges him to a fight on the basis that if he loses, then he changes studies, allowing Cherry to move into No. 1 study. Wharton wins, beginning his ascendancy to captain of the form. The Remove then hold a feast for the aliens to make up for the free fight at the station. Sir Hilton Popper chases a sneak thief, Alfred ‘Erbert Parker into Greyfriars, but the thief manages to hide Popper’s wallet in a guy of Inky made by Temple & Co. before being captured. Protesting his innocence, he has to be freed. Bunter looks for the wallet and believes Temple & Co. to be hiding it in the woodshed, telling Loder of his suspicions. Loder investigates that night, only to find and bash up the guy, and then accidentally frighten off Mr Parker. The following day the Famous Five investigate, catch Mr Parker in the act of retrieving the wallet, capture him and the wallet, and destroy the guy. Bunter opens a letter for Carboy from Dick Holroyd at Oldcroft, and decides to meet him in Carboy’s place, to pay him back for a practical joke. Bunter, using Wharton’s name, tells Holroyd that Carboy is completely unpopular, and that the reasons for his leaving Oldcroft are to be investigated. Holroyd goes on to Greyfriars, and Carboy accuses Wharton of opening his letter until Bunter explains. Carboy later rescues Wharton from a Highcliffe rag to restore good feeling. When Mr Quelch receives a reply from his letter to Oldcroft, it transpires that Holroyd had owned up to the practical joke Carboy had been forced out for, and Carboy is free to return to his old school. Myron Polk arranges for a gunman to take a pot-shot at Wharton on the set, but is hit himself. Meanwhile, Bunter uses his ventriloquism to leave the location set at Jack Rabbit Canyon and go and stay back at the Long Beach boarding house in comfort. Polk arranges for Slick Wilson to kidnap Wharton from the guest house, but Bunter, foraging for food from the larder gets in the way and arrested by mistake by Peter Carter. However, Bunter discovers a fake car is being sent to kidnap Wharton under the pretence of having been sent by Mr Fish, and Mr Carter at last manages to arrest Slick Wilson. Bunter wrecks Wharton’s armchair and persuades him to replace it with General Parkinson’s chair, under the mistaken belief that Mr Lazarus was selling it cheaply. When the chair is wrecked as Bunter tries to steal it with Coker’s innocent help, General Parkinson’s lost pearls are discovered hidden inside, and the reward pays for Mr Lazarus’s bill and the chair to be repaired. Meanwhile the Remove football XI meet Courtfield Council School; and despite the unsportsmanlike play of two new recruits, Brooker and Climpson, Courtfield manage to force a draw and impress Alderman Moore, who has offered a subsidy of 100 pounds for the best amateur team in Courtfield. Brooker and Climpson set up their own XI, the Crusaders, to gain the prize, and try and recruit Peter Todd, who refuses. Meanwhile Skinner tampers with Alonzo’s tonic, making him temporarily strong [cf. M 905 and M 1344-1348]. When Alonzo is ragged by Brooker & Co. Bulstrode plots to discredit Mr Quelch by complaining to the Head about excessive numbers of lines given out, but Wharton and his pals decide to do their lines anyway. When Bulstrode tells Mr Quelch he wants to appeal to the Head, unfortunately Alonzo blurts out Bulstrode’s real motives, and it all comes to naught. ALONZO THE GREAT, Magnet 1345 of 1933, by Frank Richards. Having accidentally helped Bunter steal Coker’s feast, Alonzo sets off for tea with Professor Sparkinson with both Bunter and Coker on his trail. Coker wants to give him a hiding, whilst Bunter wants to gatecrash tea. Professor Sparkinson gives Alonzo the crimson elixir of strength, whilst his inventions keep Bunter without. Upon leaving, Alonzo takes some of the elixir and beats Bunter. He then rescues Coker from two footpads, Cadger and Beaky Bill. He gets back to Greyfriars where Peter Todd is waiting to give him a batting, but Alonzo manages to turn the tables due to his new strength. ALONZO THE SLOGGER, Magnet 905 of 1925, by Frank Richards [SRS]. Alonzo wants to be the Greyfriars’ representative in the Public Schools’ Junior Boxing Championship. When he is refused, he has doubts about his prowess, and sends off for Skinnem’s Staminoid Syrup. This boosts his strength and confidence to such an extent that he cheeks Quelch in class, thrashes Loder for bullying, starts a boxing class, and beats Trumper in a fair fight. He is entered in the boxing contest, but his strength goes when in the ring against Tom Merry. It transpires that the syrup was actually a horse tonic in the wrong bottle. (cf. Alonzo meets a drunken clergyman, the Reverend Jeremiah Slagg, who persuades him to collect subscriptions for the Cannibals’ Conversion Society. Meeting no luck at Greyfriars, Alonzo gains 10 shillings from Uncle Benjamin. Trying to increase this, Alonzo buys a box of goods with Fish to sell on commission, but the goods are shoddy, and their few customers rag them. To get brandy for the pudding Wharton and Cherry visit the Red Cow and are caught by Carberry, though luckily the Head believes their visit is for an innocent purpose. Herbert Mimble then tries to steal the silver from the Co.’s pudding. None of the puddings are a success as Desmond forgot to put sugar and spice in his, Wun Lung put Worcester sauce in Russell’s and the Co. all added extra ingredients to theirs; so the form spend the silver on Mrs Mimble’s Christmas puddings for a feast. Charpentier’s 5,000 franc note goes missing and Tatters is suspected, having been the last junior in Mossoo’s study, but when his belongings are searched nothing is found. Inky has suspected Carne of framing Tatters, as he is under an obligation to Rackstraw, and puts the note back in Mossoo’s study. Wally, masquerading as Billy at Greyfriars, tries to avoid seeing Bessie Bunter, who plans to visit the school on her way to stay with an aunt. Wally is ragged by the form and kept within gates so that he will have to see her. However, he finally manages to persuade Snoop to meet her at the station to keep her away from Greyfriars, and feed her, and repay the money Billy owes her. This was Bessie’s first appearance, and leads to Snoop eventually knowing the truth about Wally’s impersonation. The first appearance of Bessie Bunter. Bunter is rescued from the river by a mysterious stranger after having broken through the ice; and takes to his bed to play the invalid, until given a drastic cure by Bob Cherry as “Dr Robert”. The Co. sneak off early to Cherry Place, where Dr and Mrs Locke are also guests, to leave Bunter behind still asleep. Bunter works out where they have gone and follows in a taxi, arriving in time to interrupt the Courtfield Cracksman burgling Major Cherry’s safe. AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR, Magnet 1420 of 1935, by Frank Richards. Jack Drake and Bunter are staying with the Famous Five at Cherry Place. Bunter manages to save Drake from being abducted by Jimmy the Fox, after Drake to trade off with Ferrers Locke for the Dandy, and considers himself a hero. He then gets a phone call allegedly from Mauleverer Towers inviting him to stay, and sets off in a hired car the next day. Actually he is kidnapped by Jenkins and Biter, and a trunk containing Jimmy the Fox, posing as Bunter’s luggage, delivered to Cherry Place. Jimmy the Fox puts Drake into the trunk to be called for, but Bunter manages to escape from the kidnappers and return in time to foil the plot. Reprinted in Howard Baker Magnet volume 33. Dallas is about to expelled, framed for an offence committed by Vernon-Smith; but comes to Ferrers Locke’s rescue when attacked by an ex-convict. In return Locke clears his name at Greyfriars. Bunter throws tarts through Prout’s window to hide them, having just pinched them from Cherry, but they hit Prout and Bunter gets the cane. Later Bunter asks Prout for the tarts back and is caned again. To get his own back he leaves a message, “Prout is a cheaky beest”, in his study. Coker finds the message, and is about to dispose of it when Prout arrives. Assuming it is Coker’s, Prout takes him to Dr Locke, and Coker is expelled. Aunt Judy turns up for tea, discovers what has happened and asks Wharton to help. He realises Coker didn’t understand that Prout suspected him of writing Bunter’s message, and manages to clear the matter up. Reprinted in Greyfriars Holiday Annual 1978. AUNT JUDY COMES TO STAY, Magnet 895 of 1925, by Frank Richards [FGC]. Aunt Judy is coming to tea and Coker enlists the help of the Famous Five to refurbish his study. Unfortunately she turns up as Coker is being ragged, and decides to stay a few days to look after him. That night Skinner convinces Aunt Judy to make Coker wear a night-cap, but the Famous Five sneak in later and glue it to his head. Miss Coker goes out and is robbed by Nolan, a rascally estate agent who had tried to sell her a piece of worthless land. Meanwhile, Wibley dresses up as Aunt Judy and takes the Famous Five to tea with Coker, until the imposture is discovered, upon which he flees. He falls in with Nolan and his confederates, who think he is Aunt Judy, and manages to recover Miss Coker’s wallet and bring the criminals to justice. Reprinted in Howard Baker Magnet volume 86.
