CHEERFUL CHINEE, THE, Magnet 38 of 1908, by Frank Richards. Bunter is scared by a dragon in the Remove corridor, which turns out to be a kite made by Wun Lung. Taking the kite out that evening to test it, Wun Lung manages to scare Mr Capper. When he investigates with Mr Prout, who shoots down the creature with his gun, they discover it to be a kite. Bunter, inspired by Wun Lung’s kite, determines to build a glider but is not successful. Bunter trips over Mrs Kebble’s poodle Fido and it dies, the shock being too much for its system as it has been constantly overfed. Wun Lung uses Fido as the main ingredient for a stew, although his guests don’t find out until they have had several helpings. CHINESE CAPTAIN, THE, Magnet 55 of 1909, by Frank Richards. Wharton leaves Greyfriars for a week to visit his uncle, leaving Wun Lung as temporary captain. Bulstrode tries to bully Wun Lung into resigning, but gets the worse of the argument. Bunter sees an advert for the Patriotic Home Work Association, colouring cards at piece rates, and determines to send off for details. Bulstrode tries again to bully Wun Lung, but Nugent, Cherry and Hurree Singh intervene. As form captain, Wun Lung determines to lead the Remove football team against Lowerdale Junior XI, despite the rest of the form’s objections, and surprises everyone by leading the Remove team to victory. Bunter manages to raise 6 shillings to buy a colour box from the Home Work Association, and starts to colour in postcards, in the expectation of earning £3 per week by his labours. Wun Lung insists on taking the lead role in the Shakespeare play the Dramatic Society are rehearsing, with farcical results. Finally Wharton returns as the Remove are ragging Wun Lung for soaking them with the hose, and resumes the captaincy. Reprinted in Greyfriars Book Club volume 45.

Wharton intervenes, only for Mr Quelch to arrive and give all present lines. Cherry intervenes to release Wharton and Nugent from detention, but gets no thanks from Wharton. Later Bulstrode and his cronies rag Hazel and discover he wears a locket with his sister’s photo. Bulstrode intends to keep it, and Hazel fight until he is beaten to try and regain it. Wharton then intervenes, and is beaten by Bulstrode, but when Cherry also challenges Bulstrode, he gives the locket back to Hazeldene. Cherry gets in a feed, but Hazel rags it under the impression that the food belongs to Bulstrode. Anxious to make amends, he volunteers to break bounds and fetch in more tuck from the village. Bulstrode is punished for having deliberately mislead Hazel, and Hazel returns with the tuck for a good feed. Reprinted in Greyfriars Book Club volume 3 & Gems 1477-8.
