ZAMPA The engineer aboard the MV Fanny Jones, charted by Colonel Wharton to take Hurree Singh to India. He discovered the propeller had been sabotaged by Pietro when the ship broke down in the Red Sea. [M 964] ZARA The Queen of the Ring in Muccolini’s circus. She believed in second sight, and so gave Bunter’s crystal ball readings credence. She believed Bunter had rescued her when her horse bolted and praised him as a hero, until she discovered he was a fraud. When Muccolini was arrested for spying, she married Marco the lion-tamer and took over the running of the circus. [M 1481-1490] ZERO, CAPTAIN MARCOS Count Zero’s ancestor. He was captured after Drake defeated the Spanish Armada and held prisoner at Polpelly. Whilst there, he hid the treasure his ship the San Pietro had been carrying. [M 1453] ZERO, COUNT After Mr Vernon-Smith had bought the property of Polpelly, Count Zero kidnapped Vernon-Smith, to be exchanged for the treasure his ancestor had hidden at Polpelly. Bunter accidentally discovered and released Smithy, so Count Zero followed the juniors to Polpelly. There, he played ghost and kidnapped Nugent and Bull, intending to add the other Friars to his tally, but Smithy managed to outwit and trap him, whilst Nugent and Bull found the treasure. As he no longer posed a threat, Smithy let him go. [M 1452-1455] ZORRO, JUAN The owner of Zorro’s Spanish Circus. Sir James Hobson paid him to keep Pedrillo out of the country and under his control, to prevent Pedrillo from claiming an inheritance that had come to Sir James. When Pedrillo was injured in a fall, he came to Greyfriars to recuperate, and the Head let him stay. Sir James ordered Zorro to regain Pedrillo, but Wharton suspected the truth and forced Sir James’ hand. [M 945-948].
